Pierce County Councilmember Douglas Richardson was elected to office as representative of District 6 in November 2012.

Public Service

Councilmember Richardson has a distingished history of public service including 17 years on the Lakewood City Council from 1995 -2012. During his seven years as Mayor of Lakewood, Richardson focused on public safety, economic development and parks. He spearheaded the creation of the South Sound Military and Communities Partnership to address military growth and coordination issues in partnership with Joint Base Lewis-McChord and surrounding jurisdictions.
While on the City Council, Richardson served on several boards and committees including: Law Enforcement Support Agency (board member), South Sound 911 Policy Board (board member), Lakewood Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (chair), and numerous civic and fraternal organizations.

Councilmember Richardson has been heavily involved in the district for over 20 years, and knows the issues and priorities of this community. As the District 6 Representative and Chair of the Council for 2016 Richardson will focus on continued transportation improvements, addressing blighted properties and property crimes, public health and safety issues, and fiscal responsibility. Along with serving at the Chair of the Council, Councilmember Richardson serves as Vice Chair of the Performance Audit Committee, member of the Community Development Committee, and Vice Chair of the Economic and Infrastructure Development Committee. Councilmember Richardson also serves on a number of external boards and commissions.

Professional and Educational Background

Councilmember Richardson was raised in West Groton, Massachusetts, and came to the Lakewood area while serving on active duty with the 2nd Ranger Battalion on Fort Lewis. He is a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and was awarded a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Councilmember Richardson retired from the Army Reserve as a brigadier general after completing 32 years of active and reserve service and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

Personal Life

Councilmember Richardson has over 30 years of management experience in private sector Defense Systems. He and his wife, Charlene, have two grown
