Active Transportation Planning

Active transportation refers to any form of self-propelled, human-powered transportation such as walking, cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, and travel by wheelchair.  Active transportation planning is important to provide travel options, relieve traffic congestion, reduce air pollution and fuel consumption, promote physical activity and health, and improve quality of life.

The Pierce County Comprehensive Plan contains policies promoting the development of a system of interconnected active transportation facilities, as well as programs and resources designed to encourage and enable citizens to use active transportation modes.  The Puget Sound region’s Active Transportation Plan is one of the main resources utilized in the creation of Pierce County’s Plan.

Active Transportation Projects

The 2017 Active Transportation Project List identifies active transportation improvements that are either under construction or scheduled to begin construction this year.

These active transportation improvements may be constructed on their own or in conjunction with other roadway improvements. However, the construction schedule for any project may be affected by financial, design, environmental, right-of-way, or other delays.

Active Transportation Resources

There are a number of local resources to help guide active transportation enthusiasts around the Pierce County.  Our Bicycling Resources page includes the Pierce County Bike Map, which shows trails and other facilities to help bicyclists choose their route.  The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department publishes a walking guide of popular routes in the County.
