Community Plan Updates

The 4 Central Pierce County Community Plans

As part of the 2015 Comprehensive Plan process several communities expressed interest in updating their Community Plans. The Pierce County Council has directed Planning and Land Services (PALS) to prepare updates of 4 Community Plans shown in the map below.

The update will include a review of individual community issues and interests for each plan area. It may also identify issues that are common to all four Plan areas.

The respective Land Use Advisory Commissions (LUACs) will review and discuss policies and issues through study sessions. These study sessions are open to the public. Please join in this conversation by attending a future LUAC meeting. You can view the schedule and all meeting materials by clicking on the "Find Public Meetings" button. You can submit general comments any time using the "Provide Comments" button.  See each Community Plan area webpage for more information about that area, using the links or map above.

On August 2nd, PALS Director, Dennis Hanberg, gave a presentation to interested community members about an internal County effort to:
  • Align various departments on planning and implementation efforts
  • Implement existing Community Plans and the newly adopted 2015 Comprehensive Plan
  • Support urban services and development within the County's central unincorporated urban area

This internal effort was initially named “The City of Pierce”.  The name has raised concerns among residents as this effort was communicated beyond County departments.  To clearly communicate the nature of this effort, we are planning to rename it to more accurately reflect its purpose.

2016-2017 Update Process

The Community Plan update process will be completed in two phases as depicted below. PALS will prepare a summary of the issues identified in Phase I and present them to the County Council at the end of 2016. It is anticipated that the County Council will provide feedback on the identified issues which will enable PALS to focus policy refinement through Phase II.
