Pierce County is updating the County’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Plan. A draft plan will be released in Summer 2019 for public comment.
This PROS Plan creates a vision and strategic implementation plan to provide opportunities for people to connect to nature; live active, healthy lifestyles; experience vibrant community spaces; and learn about sustainable practices. The plan also addresses environmental conservation and regional non-motorized trails as integral elements of a livable community. It will guide the Pierce County parks and recreation system through the year 2030.
This update of the PROS Plan is required every six years to maintain eligibility for grants administered by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO). RCO is a major source of grant funding for Pierce County’s parks and trails.
The PROS Plan will include the following elements:
An inventory of park, trail and open space properties managed by Pierce County;
An analysis of demographics, population trends, and growth projections;
An analysis of demand and need for parks, trails, and open space within unincorporated Pierce County; and
Identification of projects to be accomplished in the short-term (6 years) and medium-term (10 years) to meet the identified needs based on projected funding.
The PROS Plan will also include an update to the Pierce County Trails Plan.
