Construction on a roundabout at the intersection of Point Fosdick Drive Northwest, Stone Drive Northwest, and 34th Avenue Northwest began April 30. The project is expected to be complete by early December.
A segment of Stone Drive Northwest reopened June 20 after being closed for 22 days from where it intersects with Point Fosdick Drive Northwest. During the closure, crews excavated the road and built a new roadway surface that is up to 8 feet lower than the previous surface.
About the project
A roundabout is a circular intersection where motorists travel counterclockwise around a center island. This will be the first roundabout in unincorporated Pierce County built by the county.
The roundabout will be one lane, and will feature crosswalks with flashing lights that alert motorists that a pedestrian is crossing. The roundabout will include an apron that trucks can drive onto if extra room is needed when turning.
The project will also include additional street lighting, concrete sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and storm drainage treatment facilities.
In the coming months, traffic will be shifted onto a temporary bypass road while crews regrade and build the legs of the intersection on Point Fosdick Drive Northwest and 34th Avenue Northwest. Crews will also build the roundabout’s island and the other project features.
Motorists should expect each leg of the intersection to be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic in the project area between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays throughout this work. Flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic during these hours.
Crews will place a final layer of asphalt and apply final traffic markings in Spring 2019.
Miles Resources is the contractor. The construction cost is approximately $2.7 million. It is funded with a grant of approximately $1.7 million from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board’s Urban Arterial Program, along approximately $1 million in County Road Funds.
Pierce County held an open house in June 2015 to share information about the project and gather feedback on the design.
