What’s Happening

Construction on a roundabout at the intersection of Point Fosdick Drive Northwest, Stone Drive Northwest, and 34th Avenue Northwest will begin April 30. The bulk of the work is expected to be complete by early December.

About the Project

A roundabout is a circular intersection where motorists travel counterclockwise around a center island. This will be the first roundabout in unincorporated Pierce County built by the county.

The roundabout will be one lane, and will feature crosswalks with flashing lights that alert motorists that a pedestrian is crossing. The roundabout will include an apron that trucks can drive onto if extra room is needed when turning.

The project will also include additional street lighting, pervious concrete sidewalks that reduce surface water runoff, curbs and gutters, and storm drainage treatment facilities.

Initial work
Throughout May, crews will clear bushes and trees, install storm drainage facilities to control water running through the worksite, and build a temporary bypass road on the east side of Point Fosdick Drive Northwest.

Motorists should expect each leg of the intersection to be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic in the project area between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic during these hours.

30-day road closure
Starting in late May, approximately 900 feet of Stone Drive Northwest will be closed for approximately 30 days from where it intersects with Point Fosdick Drive Northwest. Crews will excavate the road and build a new roadway section that is up to 8 feet lower than the current road. Crews will also fill in part of the intersection. The intersection will ultimately be raised about 3 feet.

Motorists should watch for electronic message boards for exact dates of the closure. A detour route of approximately 3.4 miles will take motorists from Stone Drive Northwest to Jahn Avenue Northwest to 32nd Street Northwest to 22nd Avenue Northwest to 36th Street Northwest to Point Fosdick Drive Northwest.

Final phase
Following the closure, crews will build a temporary bypass road on the west side of Point Fosdick Drive Northwest. Traffic will be shifted onto the temporary bypass roads while crews regrade and build the legs of the intersection on Point Fosdick Drive Northwest and 34th Avenue Northwest. Crews will also build the roundabout’s island, widen the intersection to accommodate the apron, and install the other project features. This work is expected to be complete by early December.

Motorists should expect each leg of the intersection to be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic in the project area between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays throughout this work. Flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic during these hours.

Crews will place a final layer of asphalt and apply final traffic markings in Spring 2019.

Miles Resources is the contractor. The construction cost is approximately $2.7 million. It is funded with a grant of approximately $1.7 million from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board’s Urban Arterial Program, along approximately $1 million in County Road Funds.

Pierce County held an open house in June 2015 to share information about the project and gather feedback on the design.
