Project Update

Thanks to everyone who has engaged with the Pipeline Trail Project over the past several months. With COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot meet with you in person, as planned, so we have created a self-guided presentation that you can access below to serve as a Virtual Open House. Some major takeaways:

  • Preliminary Design is complete for Pipeline Trail to South Hill.
  • Phase 1: We have identified phases for implementing the next steps. Phase 1 will construct 1.6 miles of trail from the terminus of the City of Tacoma’s trail at 72nd St. E and Waller Rd E and will continue through Orangegate Park, including trailhead facilities at Orangegate. We will complete final design for Phase 1 over the next year and a half and plan for construction on this section starting in 2022.
  • Grant Application: we submitted a grant application for funding to construct Phase 1. We should know if the application was successful by October of this year.
  • Future Phases: We will continue to plan for additional phases across Canyon Rd and out to South Hill  as resources become available.
  • Continued Input:  There will be more opportunity for input as the design moves forward. To continue to receive updates on this process, please sign up for email updates.

Thank you for your insightful input, feedback, and support over the past months. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions and stay tuned for more updates as we move forward with Phase 1.

About the Project

Pierce County’s Pipeline Trail will be a paved trail along the Tacoma Water Pipeline between 72nd St E and 94th Ave E. This trail will connect existing Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail in South Hill to recently constructed Pipeline Trail within the City of Tacoma, providing residents with expanded non-motorized commuting and recreational opportunities, supporting healthy active living.

Preliminary design is complete for Pierce County’s Pipeline Trail. Planning is underway for detailed design and construction of Phase 1, connecting Tacoma’s Pipeline Trail at 72nd St. E and Waller Rd E to Orangegate Park, with construction beginning in 2022.

Future efforts will include completion of Pipeline Trail to South Hill with integration into Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail and Heritage Recreation Center. Further out, Pierce County has prioritized continued trail and bike infrastructure development to connect Foothills Trail, another 21 miles of existing Regional Trail. This longer-term connection has long been a vision of Regional Trail advocates with the "Tahoma to Tacoma" vision connecting communities from Commencement Bay to Mt. Rainier National Park.
