Fairfax washout

What’s happening

Pierce County is working on next steps after a Feb. 6, 2020 washout of the Fairfax Forest Reserve Road just south of State Route 165.

Road closure in effect

The Fairfax Forest Reserve Road is closed between Mowich Lake Road and Manley Moore Road due to the washout.

This is expected to be a long-term closure due to the extensive damage to the roadway.

Do not go past “road closed” barricades. The road is not stable and the washout continues to slowly grow.

Next steps

Our next steps include:

  • Finalizing an alternate access plan for residents. We are currently seeking permission from private property owners to establish an access route. This route will be closed, except to residents, authorized personnel and emergency services. The route is subject to change at any time, including complete closure.
  • Hiring a geotechnical engineer to assess the damaged roadway. This assessment took place Tuesday, Feb. 11.
  • Designing a permanent repair. We will begin to design the repair once the results of the assessment are available.

More details on our repair plans and the expected length of the road closure will be provided as they are available.

Nearby mudslides

Multiple mudslides occurred on this road during the early February weather event. These mudslides have been assessed by a geotechnical engineer. Further assessments are needed before we can begin cleaning up these mudslides.
