Construction to partially close intersection at Wollochet Drive NW and Fillmore Drive NW Aug. 23-25

The intersection at Wollochet Drive NW and Fillmore Drive NW near Gig Harbor will be partially closed Aug. 23-25 so crews can replace the pavement. The work will begin at 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23 and be completed by 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25.

The following traffic revisions will be in effect during the work:

• Traffic traveling westbound on Fillmore Drive NW will not have access to Wollochet Drive NW. Traffic will be detoured to the north on 38th Avenue NW to Hunt Street NW, and then west onto Hunt Street NW to Wollochet Drive NW. Westbound Fillmore Drive NW will be open to local traffic only between 38th Avenue NW and Wollochet Drive NW.

• Traffic travelling southbound on Wollochet Drive NW will not be allowed to turn left onto Fillmore Drive NW.

• Traffic travelling northbound on Wollochet Drive NW will not be allowed to travel past the intersection. Instead, traffic will be channeled onto Fillmore Drive NW.

Part of a larger projectThis intersection work is part of a larger Pierce County project along a 0.41 mile stretch of Wollochet Drive NW between East Bay Drive NW to Fillmore Drive NW. The project includes expanding the roadway to four lanes, and adding concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and retaining walls along Wollochet Drive NW. The project also includes new street lighting, an enclosed storm drainage system, and improvements to the existing traffic signal at Fillmore Drive NW.

Construction on this stretch of Wollochet Drive NW began in June 2012, and is expected to be completed in November. Miles Resources LLC is the contractor. The anticipated construction cost is approximately $3.6 million.

Nearby projectThe county recently made improvements to Wollochet Drive NW between 40th Street NW and East Bay Drive NW. The roadway was expanded to three lanes between 40th Street NW and Artondale Drive NW, and four lanes between Artondale Drive NW and East Bay Drive NW.

The project also included the addition of turn lanes at intersections, new concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks, new street lighting, an enclosed stormwater drainage and treatment system, and improved traffic signals at 40th Street NW, Artondale Drive NW, and East Bay Drive NW.

Work on this stretch was complete in May. Some minor follow-up work may be done in the next few weeks.
