Work to replace generators at five sanitary sewer pump stations located throughout Lakewood began Monday, April 28. Construction is expected to last through early November, although the work at each site will take approximately one month.
The existing natural gas generators will be replaced with new diesel generators to improve reliability of the sanitary sewer collection system, reduce noise levels and reduce the cost of operating the pump stations. The work also includes replacement of electrical cabinet enclosures and installation of water backflow prevention devices.
The following is a list of anticipated construction dates for each location. The construction schedule will be updated as necessary at www.piercecountywa.org/lakewoodgenerator.
- April 28 to early June: No. 68 – West Shore, 12 West Shore Ave. SW
- Early June to mid-July: No. 66 – Dowerdell, 7571 68th Ave. W
- Mid-July to mid-August: No. 48 – Ponders, 13026 Glenwood Dr. SW
- Mid-August to early October: No. 59 – Country Club, 12851 Country Club Dr. SW
- Late September to late October: No. 71 – Melody Lane, 10230 Melody Lane SW
The contractor for this work is McClure and Sons, Inc. The $361,365 project is funded by sewer ratepayer fees.
This is the second to last phase of a project to replace generators at 28 pump station sites within Lakewood. The generators are used during power outages to keep the sewage pump station in service and avoid a possible wastewater overflow.
The existing generators were installed between 1983 and 1986, and have reached the end of their expected useful life. Lack of replacement parts and manufacturer service technicians make these generators difficult to maintain and create a failure risk in the sanitary sewer collection system.
