September named “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in Pierce County

Having a child diagnosed with cancer is arguably one of the most devastating things that can happen to a family. That’s why members of the Pierce County Council wanted to help draw attention to the battle against childhood cancer by officially designating September 2014 as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”

“Too many children and parents in Pierce County have to hear the awful news that cancer has invaded their lives, and it’s up to each and every one of us to do what we can to help prevent that from happening,” said Councilmember Joyce McDonald, who represents Pierce County’s 2nd Council District. “All of us on the County Council have been personally affected by cancer in one way or another and that’s why we wanted to help raise awareness of it with this resolution.”

Council Resolution R2014-100 notes that organizations like the American Cancer Fund for Children, Inc. and Kids Cancer Connection, Inc. can help by sponsoring Courageous Kid recognition award ceremonies and hospital celebrations in honor of a child's determination and bravery to fight the battle against childhood cancer.

Those organizations are among the dozens dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for cancer-stricken children and their families, providing a variety of vital services to children undergoing cancer treatment at Seattle Children's Hospital, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma and other hospitals throughout the country.

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children between infancy and age 15 in the United States, and more than 15,000 American children are diagnosed with cancer each year. In fact, one in five of our nation's children will lose his or her battle with cancer and many will suffer from the long-term effects of treatment.
