“Healthiest nation in one generation” could begin with Pierce County

Members of the County Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday, March 31, proclaiming April 6-12 “National Public Health Week” in Pierce County. The measure is part of a broader effort to designate National Public Health Week across the country, with the goal of becoming the healthiest nation in one generation – by 2030.

“We’ve covered a lot of ground in the drive to provide adequate health care to our citizens,” said Councilmember Rick Talbert, who represents the 5th Council District. “I’m proud to be a part of anything we can do to draw attention to local health care issues and National Public Health Week is a big component of that.”

Resolution R2015-37 calls for promoting better access to care and connecting more people with health insurance, health care and prevention strategies. It also affirms that a strong public health system supports healthy communities and moves society toward preventing illness, disease and injury.

National Public Health Week is spearheaded by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, which has been calling on local businesses, health care systems, governments, community organizations, and residents to join them in the effort. The Health Department will be sponsoring a free community event, Public Health 101, on Wednesday, April 8, from 9 to 10 a.m. at their auditorium, 3629 South D Street in Tacoma.
