Pilot of two-boat service on the Pierce County Ferry during summer weekends starts July 1

The Pierce County Ferry will offer additional weekend runs in July and August to minimize delays during the busy summer season as part of a pilot program in 2016.

Pierce County will operate both boats from noon to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays. In addition to normally scheduled runs, the system’s second ferry will depart Steilacoom at 12:30 p.m., 1:50 p.m., 2:50 p.m., 3:50 p.m., 4:50 p.m. and 6 p.m. Visitors can view the ferry schedule at www.piercecountywa.org/ferry.

“The summer is a busy time on the islands as people enjoy their weekend activities,” said Deb Wallace, Pierce County Public Works airport and ferry administrator. “This pilot two-boat service should help residents and visitors reach the islands and Steilacoom with fewer delays during peak travel times during busy summer weekends.”

The two-boat pilot service was recommended in Pierce County’s recently-completed Waterborne Transportation Study to enhance the economic vitality and livability of Anderson and Ketron islands.

The service will be operated as a pilot program in 2016. The service will cost approximately $40,000. According to the study, the service is expected to pay for itself, however Pierce County will evaluate the cost and ridership to determine if the service should be offered in the future.

The Pierce County Ferry provides service between Town of Steilacoom and Anderson and Ketron islands. Learn more about the ferry system at www.piercecountywa.org/ferry.
