2015 U.S. Open - We Did It!

The long awaited U.S. Open at Chambers Bay has come and gone. It’s hard to believe it’s over already after all the effort that went into having this major golf championship here in our own backyard! We can certainly take pride in those efforts and everyone in this region should feel pride as we showcased our region and offered outstanding hospitality to visitors. Now that we can relax a bit (we say ‘a bit’ because we’ll be getting efforts together to invite the USGA back to Chambers Bay), let’s take a look at some facts and numbers from this incredible event. Forgivable Loan Program to Assist in Aerospace Job Creation

Pierce County is pleased to announce a new program responding to the shortage of skilled workforce available to our local aerospace sector called the Aerospace Job Creation and Training (AJCT) loan program. Aerospace industry employers filling new jobs with low- to moderate-income individuals can qualify for permanent working capital loans of up to $35,000 for each new position created to assist with wages and training costs. This will enable workers to gain industry experience and develop skills needed. The greatest benefit to the employer is that the entire loan can be forgiven if the new employee remains with the company for one year after the initial hire date. Full article...

Cockrell Hard Ciders
The Pacific Northwest is home to many quality microbreweries but few artisan cider houses. John and Rich Cockrell of Cockrell Hard Ciders plan to change that. Their creations have won many local, state and national awards and accolades. The most recent was the 2015 Pacific Northwest Cider Awards' Gold Medal in the Modern Sweet Category for its Cockrell Hard Cider Original. This is the beverage that started it all, a result from the encouragement of friends and family to the brothers to consider sharing their creative talents with a larger audience. Full article...

The Pierce County Economic Development Department is seeking two citizen volunteers to serve on its nine member Arts Commission (PCAC) for a three-year term. America's Largest Seed Fund is Coming to Seattle Aug. 19

With $2.5 billion in funding provided annually to small advanced technology firms, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs help spur new technological discoveries and facilitate the commercialization of innovations. The SBIR Road Tour is an opportunity for historically underserved communities to engage with Federal Program Officers from various SBIR/STTR agencies. If you’re an innovator, entrepreneur, researcher, or small technology firm, take advantage of this coveted local opportunity to hear directly from federal agency program managers, and meet one-on-one with program decision makers.

SBA Disaster Loans Available for Washington Counties Affected by Drought
New drought declarations have led to the expansion of SBA Disaster Loans in Washington and neighboring Idaho counties. The following is a list of all drought declarations made for Washington this summer:

  • Declaration 14379-01 WA effective July 16 -- primary Washington counties include Ferry, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Spokane and Stevens; neighboring Washington counties include Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, Skagit, Whatcom and Whitman.
  • Declaration 14367-01 WA effective July 2 -- primary Washington counties include Garfield and Kittitas; neighboring Washington counties include Asotin, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Grant, King, Pierce, Whitman, and Yakima.
  • Declaration 14356-01 WA effective June 25 -- primary Washington counties include Adams, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Grant, Klickitat, Walla Walla and Yakima; neighboring Washington counties include Douglas, Garfield, King, Kittitas, Lewis, Lincoln, Okanogan, Pierce, Skamania and Whitman.
